Frequently asked questions

How much student loan do I repay on £35,000?

In 2026/27 you repay £729 a year on Plan 1, £505 on Plan 2, £108 on Plan 4 and £900 on Plan 5. A postgraduate loan adds £840.

What are the student loan thresholds for 2026/27?

Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000 and postgraduate loans £21,000 a year. You repay 9% of income above the threshold, or 6% for a postgraduate loan.

Do I repay two loans at once?

If you have a postgraduate loan and an undergraduate loan, you repay both at the same time: 6% over £21,000 plus 9% over your plan threshold. If you have two undergraduate plans, you repay 9% of income over the lower of the two thresholds, not 9% for each plan.

Is a student loan repayment a tax?

No. It is taken through payroll with income tax and National Insurance, but it goes to the Student Loans Company to pay off your loan. Any balance left is written off at the end of the loan term.

When do Plan 5 repayments start?

Plan 5 covers English courses started from 1 August 2023. Repayments can start from April 2026, the April after the course ends, at 9% of income over £25,000 a year.
